Travel Through Time Across Akhaltsikhe's History

The town was founded by the princely Jakeli family approximately 800 years ago. In Georgian, "Akhaltsikhe" means "new fortress." Once a battlefield witness to legendary conflicts and successive conquests by Russians, Ottomans, and Mongols, the town endured countless hardships yet stood resilient against the ravages of time. Fortunately, the city was completely renovated in 2011, transforming it into a major cultural and historical complex spanning 7 hectares.

This church, recently reconstructed in 2020, is the focal point of new Akhaltsikhe. At its entrance, you'll encounter a beautifully sculpted statue of Queen Tamar. Climate in Akhaltsikhe

When visiting Akhaltsikhe, summers are warm yet pleasant, with temperatures not exceeding 26°C, while winters are quite cold with frequently sub-zero temperatures.

The best period to enjoy summer activities in Akhaltsikhe is between late June and early September.

To reach Akhaltsikhe, fly into Tbilisi International Airport. During your journey, take time to admire the magnificent landscapes throughout the region. The town is just 3 hours from the airport by taxi or minibus.

You can also take Georgia's East-West Highway via a marshrutka (shared minibus) from Tbilisi's central bus station. To make the most of your trip, depart early in the morning to arrive in Akhaltsikhe before evening.

Train is another transport option to reach this town. However, it stops at Moliti Station. From there, simply take a taxi to Akhaltsikhe.

If you're a confident driver, reach the town comfortably by renting a car in Tbilisi to Akhaltsikhe. Moreover, the road is in excellent condition.
