Sighnaghi is a Georgian city located in the easternmost part of Kakheti, in Géorgie. Covering an area of 2,978 km², the city ranks among the country's smallest. Rising above the vineyards and hills of Kakheti, Sighnaghi is undoubtedly a charming stopover.

Sighnaghi, an Authentic Historic City

Inhabited since the Paleolithic era, Sighnaghi sits at the heart of the Gombori mountain range, where exceptional landscapes draw thousands of visitors each year. Throughout its history, Sighnaghi has changed names repeatedly. During the Middle Ages, the city was known as Hereti. It was also called Kambechovani, before later becoming Kisikhi or Kisiki.

By 1770, Sighnaghi was primarily populated by artisans and merchants. In 1801, Sighnaghi, along with the rest of the country, was annexed to the Russian Empire. It was during this period that Sighnaghi officially gained city status and rapidly expanded in population and size. Under Soviet rule, it also became a major agricultural center.

The city and its surroundings are home to cultural and historical monuments, which have been protected by the state since 1975. This magnificently situated city, perched above the Alazani Valley, boasts an impressive fortification wall in excellent condition, spanning 4.5 km in length.

Sighnaghi Today

The economic crisis that gripped post-Soviet Géorgie affected Sighnaghi significantly. However, a major renovation project, recently initiated by the Georgian state and co-financed by various international organizations, aims to increase the city's tourism appeal and modernize its infrastructure. Casinos, hotels, prestigious restaurants and breathtaking views over the Alazani Valley have made Sighnaghi one of Géorgie's most beautiful cities.

Today, Sighnaghi's economic vitality springs from the production of traditional Georgian carpets, wine manufacturing and Mtsvadi. The latter is a traditional Georgian dish. Indeed, for tasting local wines and sampling the flavors of Kakheti cuisine, Sighnaghi is an ideal stop. The city is also one of Géorgie's most sought-after destinations for traditional dance performances, music festivals and artisan shops.

Sighnaghi's Main Attractions

With its immense wall—the longest architectural ensemble ever recorded in Géorgie—Sighnaghi is an ancient fortified trading town. Built from brick and stone, this rampart is pierced by 6 gates and features 23 towers. It served as a refuge for surrounding villagers during the numerous invasions that struck Géorgie throughout history.

The paved streets, lined with terracotta buildings, give the city considerable character. Brightly painted houses overlooking the Alazani Valley display beautifully carved balconies. Several monuments dating from the 18th century, such as the two Orthodox churches of Saint George and Saint Stephen, dot the narrow paved streets of the city.

Sighnaghi is also nicknamed the "city of love". Indeed, many couples travel here to marry. The charming paved alleyways, restored original woodwork and detailed façades lend the city a mystical and romantic atmosphere. This reputation is further reinforced by the presence of Wedding Square at its center, dominated by a statue of a woman holding a bouquet of flowers.

Also in central Sighnaghi stands the Museum of History and Archaeology. In addition to history and archaeology exhibits, this museum houses art installations, including works by the celebrated Georgian painter Pirosmani, a native of the Kakheti region.

But what truly sets Sighnaghi apart is Bodbe Monastery, located 2 km from the city. It is a major pilgrimage site due to its association with the Georgian evangelist known as Saint Nino of Cappadocia.

Bodbe Monastery: an Essential Monument in Sighnaghi

Perched on a hilltop in the Alazani Valley, Bodbe Monastery stands as a major pilgrimage destination in Géorgie. Its geographical position, nestled among cypresses, offers visitors an exceptional view of the peaks of the Greater Caucasus.

King Mirian began construction of the monastery on the tomb of Saint Nino, before renovations were undertaken in the 17th and then 19th centuries. Saint Nino, the saint who Christianized Géorgie in the 4th century, spent her final years at Bodbe Monastery. Accordingly, Georgians chose to bury her there.

The relics of Saint Nino adorn the interior of this monastery. Her symbol, represented by a grapevine cross, constitutes a true emblem of Christianity in Géorgie. Discover also the sepulcher of Saint Nino and frescoes depicting the 13 Syrian fathers who evangelized Géorgie.

The Bodbe monastic complex also includes a three-aisled church with three apses built between the 9th and 11th centuries, a bell tower dating from the 19th century, and a small chapel dedicated to Saint Sosana and Saint Zabulon, built in the 1990s. Near the monastery lies a sacred water spring. Drinking the holy water from this sacred source is a fundamental ritual act in Géorgie.
