Georgia's varied terrain, the presence of the Black Sea, and its altitude create remarkable climatic diversity despite the country's small size.

Georgia's climate is influenced in the west by subtropical currents and in the east by Mediterranean currents.

More specifically, a continental and dry climate dominates the east, across the interior plains.

Rainfall remains light in winter and autumn, moderate in spring and summer.

The eastern plains are shielded from Black Sea influences by the Caucasus Mountains.

Summer temperatures average between 20 and 24 °C, while in winter they fluctuate between 2 and 4 °C. Annual precipitation averages 500 to 800 mm.

In the northern mountains and in the mountainous regions of the east and west, the climate is alpine.

Winters are particularly cold and humid, while summers remain cool and sunny.

At altitude, precipitation is sometimes twice as heavy as in the eastern plains.

Snow and ice are present year-round.

The Greater Caucasus moderates climate variations by forming a barrier against polar air from the north. Meanwhile, warm and humid air from the Black Sea drifts toward the western coastal plains.

Along the Black Sea coast, stretching from Abkhazia to the Turkish border, and also in the Colchis region, the climate is subtropical.

It is characterized by high humidity due to heavy precipitation, between 1,000 and 2,000 mm annually.

Average temperatures range between 5 °C in winter and 22 °C in summer.

Georgia's 4 Climatic Zones

The Coastal Plain

Located in western Georgia, it features a humid subtropical climate. Precipitation is abundant, reaching between 1,000 and 2,500 mm per year.

In winter, temperatures are low, oscillating between 7 and 10 °C, and this is also the rainy season. Temperatures rise in spring, reaching 11 °C in March and 22 °C in May.

In summer, temperatures range between 25 and 30 °C, though humidity remains high.

The Interior Plain

Located in eastern Georgia, it enjoys a dry subtropical climate. Precipitation is sparse, ranging between 400 and 800 mm per year.

During winter, temperatures can reach between 6 and 8 °C. In spring, temperatures exceed 20 °C in April and May.

During summer, temperatures climb to around 30 °C. Rainfall is minimal.

In autumn, temperatures gradually decline, from 25 °C in September to 15 °C in November.

The Northern Mountains

Located in northern Georgia, they have an alpine climate. They average around 2,000 m in elevation. Winters are cold and humid, while summers are cool and sunny.

The Southern Mountains

Found in southern Georgia, they benefit from a continental climate. Temperatures are low in winter and high during summer.
