Georgia, a country of multiple climates

Georgia's diverse terrain, the presence of the Black Sea, and varying altitudes create different climatic influences across the country. Georgia's climate varies between the interior plains in the east, the coastal plains in the west, and mountain peaks to the north and south, and is divided into 5 climate types: warm marine climate, cold semi-arid, warm Mediterranean, temperate maritime, and moderate continental with year-round precipitation.

The mountainous zone to the east experiences a harsh climate, while the west benefits from a humid subtropical climate thanks to the Black Sea. When planning a stay in Georgia, avoid the months between December and February. Indeed, the cold is bitter during this period. It's better to plan your vacation between April and October; although evenings tend to be relatively cool.

Climate on the Black Sea coast

Best Season to Visit Georgia

On the Black Sea coast, the climate is Mediterranean. In winter, temperatures are mild and pleasant thanks to the mountains of the Greater Caucasus protecting them from polar cold. Along the Black Sea shores, precipitation is significant, with average temperatures of 22°C in summer and 5°C in winter.

Climate in eastern Georgia

In eastern Georgia, particularly in Tbilisi, the climate is continental. In summer, it's mildly warm, while in winter, the cold is dry. As you gain altitude, temperatures drop and humidity remains low.

Seasons in Georgia

The best periods to visit Georgia run from mid-May to early July, then from early September to mid-October. It is generally warm and sunny during these periods.

Summer is the ideal season for hiking or trekking in the Caucasus and its mountain ranges. The summer temperature in Georgia ranges between 20 and 30°C on average. This means that during this period, it is quite warm; for example in the plains, it is hot and dry and temperatures can reach up to 40°C. However, on the Black Sea coast, the heat is stifling during summer. You'll find some relief in the Caucasus at higher altitudes.

Georgia, situated in a temperate zone, experiences very harsh winters in the mountains. In the eastern half of Georgia, temperatures often drop below freezing from December to February, even though on average temperatures range from 2 to 6°C. For winter sports enthusiasts, winter is the best time for skiing or other winter sports.

In early autumn, roughly between September 20 and October 20, it is harvest season in Kakheti, the country's premier wine region. The trees display beautiful colors. In autumn, rain is more abundant on the Black Sea coast than in the eastern part of the country.

Spring is also a great season to visit Georgia. During this period, the climate is pleasant, neither too hot nor too cold. However, rain can occur quite frequently during the last months of spring.

When to visit Georgia?

The "pleasant season," including late spring and early autumn, is undeniably the best time to discover Georgia. During this period, between April and October, temperatures are pleasant, winters are cool and mild, and the climate is generally sunny. For your mountain excursions or hikes, it's best to plan them during this period.

But the period between June and September is also very popular with travelers choosing Georgia as their next vacation destination. Indeed, during this time, they can enjoy numerous activities, such as relaxing on the beach or visiting the monasteries and the churches perched on high mountains. During the rest of the time, that is, during the low season, Georgia is the perfect place to recharge in peace and quiet.
